"Why not Ohio?" That's a question a local attorney asked me. In January 2018, I left the newspaper in Wooster, Ohio, where I had worked as a reporter since July 2003. During a conversation with the attorney's husband, I discovered she wanted to see me.
David Broehl, one of the city's community leaders, expressed interest in my decision to start an SEO/digital marketing agency (Wooster Media Group LLC). He called to invite me to sit down and have coffee and just talk him about my business. David is one of those people who will not waste your time. If he wants to talk with you, then he is genuinely interested in what you are doing.
During the conversation, he mentioned his wife, Margo Broehl, wanted to talk to me. I thought she must have wanted to hire me to help with her website in some kind of fashion. I ran into Margo at a function, and she shared with me an idea she had for a blog: "Why Not Ohio?"
There are so many good things about Ohio, and Margo thought it would be a good idea to highlight them in a blog. I am not sure if I purchased the domain while still at the event or whether I waited until I got home. Either way, I secured it and just sat on it for months.
Part of the reason for the delay has been due to the early success of Wooster Media Group. I understand the odds of a small business closing within the first year are high, and I am not out of the woods yet. But, the Wooster Media Group has outperformed my financial projections.
Things have not slowed down with the company. In fact, I just reached an agreement on a new project. So, what has changed? Why am I starting the blog now? Well, Wendi and I just returned from the Bloggy Conference.
Tiffany Noth of Bloggy Moms organizes the annual blogging conference at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. (This is the conference that ultimately led to the launch of Wooster Media Group.) Although I write occasionally for my wife's blog, Wendi's Weekend Trips & Whatnot, and I have a blog on my business website, I do not consider myself a blogger. Well, at least until now.
It's hard not to get excited about blogging at BloggyCon. When I returned, I started working on the idea. I worked on a logo.
I thought by using a simple logo like this, I could create something akin to a living logo in that it could always be changed and customized. For example, Wendi and I recently visited the Marblehead and Port Clinton areas. Thus, this design including the Marblehead lighthouse.
The logo could have easily incorporated the Cork Screw ride at Cedar Point.
With this blog, the aim will be to highlight those things that make Ohio stand out, whether it is a destination place like Cedar Point; one of the many great cities and towns to visit, like Wooster, Berlin, or Cincinnati; one of the companies that started here in Ohio and is in Ohio; products made here, like Smucker's jams and jellies; or personalities from the Buckeye State. Wendi's blog primarily features Ohio entities, and I will likely be reposting some of her stuff here.
Though I grew up in Revere, Mass., and Daytona Beach, Fla. (with brief stints in Columbia, S.C., and Little Rock, Ark., I have really loved Wooster, my home now.
So, thank you for visiting Why Not Ohio? Buckle up, and enjoy the ride.
